2010 Honoree: Herbert Lee
Downingtown Area High School Alumni Association is proud to announce Herbert Lee as the 2008 Battle of the Brandywine Honoree.
The trophy, named for Herbert Lee, represents the drive, spirit and
goals of Herbie Lee who dedicated his life work to the youth of the
area. Born in 1938 in West Chester, he attended West Chester
University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education and
then a master's degree. He became an elementary school teacher from
1959-1968. In 1968, he became a college professor at West Chester
University, until his retirement in 2005. Mr. Lee was a pioneer in
education. No job description could encompass all that he brought to
his professional life which was never limited to the classroom, the
playing field or the office. He
was an active umpire with the Philadelphia women's baseball league.
He was inducted into the West Chester University Football Hall of
Fame and The Sturzebecker Foundation Hall of Fame. He was the first
director of Chester County Head Start Program, past director of
faculty of West Chester University, past president of Downingtown
Lions Club, and of the Downingtown High School Alumni. He was
actively involved in the fabric of his community.
This trophy, in honor of Herbert Lee and in the spirit of healthy competition, will be awarded to the winner of the annual Battle of the Brandywine and will travel between the Cougars and Whippets. |
