2010 Honoree: Francis Tweed
Downingtown High School West is proud to announce the late Coach Francis Tweed as the 2010 Battle of the Brandywine Honoree.
In 1922, Francis Tweed graduated from Downingtown High School, where
he was a skinny quarterback on a team whose home games were played
on a field full of cinders, behind the high school, which was then
located on West Lancaster Avenue, where Messiah Lutheran Church is
today. He also played football at West Chester State Teachers
College, from which he graduated with a degree in physical education
in 1926. He was hired by the
In addition to leading Downingtown's football squad to three
consecutive county championships, Tweed also coached the track team
to two consecutive county titles, and was a successful basketball
coach at the high school as well. He established what are now known
as the Ches-Mont Relays.
