 2010 Honoree: Francis Tweed

                                         Francis Tweed

Downingtown High School West is proud to announce the late Coach Francis Tweed as the 2010 Battle of the Brandywine Honoree.

In 1922, Francis Tweed graduated from Downingtown High School, where he was a skinny quarterback on a team whose home games were played on a field full of cinders, behind the high school, which was then located on West Lancaster Avenue, where Messiah Lutheran Church is today. He also played football at West Chester State Teachers College, from which he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1926. He was hired by the Downingtown School District as a physical education and math teacher in 1931.

In addition to leading Downingtown's football squad to three consecutive county championships, Tweed also coached the track team to two consecutive county titles, and was a successful basketball coach at the high school as well. He established what are now known as the Ches-Mont Relays.
